Buckhorn High School French Club Thinks Globally, Acts Locally
Buckhorn’s French Club strives to think globally and act locally. Its mission statement is to promote the French language through cultural activities and good works both in the Buckhorn community and in francophonie – the French-speaking world.
French club has participated in the Alabama Association of French Clubs Convention many years. The convention is held at the University of Alabama and clubs around the state vie for awards in drama, art, speaking, scholar’s bowl, choral, and writing competitions. Our French Club took home awards in three different categories at our last competition!
French Club is busy during the holiday season! In the past, we have partnered with ROTC to collect more than 250 canned goods for the Thanksgiving food drive. Additionally, we sponsored two whole Thanksgiving dinners for needy families. Just a month later we worked with the Salvation Army Angel Tree to shop for a young student’s Christmas gifts. December is also when French Club traditionally sings French carols to the middle schoolers at Buckhorn Middle School. French Club ends its year with a French Christmas Party- once again with the construction of the famous “bûche de Noël” or Yule log cake in French.
The French Club is also involved in the promotion of French as a second language choice through our development of “French Week.” This effort has spawned an interest in French for many students outside of our class. The French Club has decorated the Commons Area with awareness posters about the French language, viewed a French film after school, and hosted Mardi Gras activities such as a bead toss. Our biggest activity was a crepe and croissant sale to benefit Haiti Relief.
French Club loves to travel! In the past we have travelled to Memphis, TN to see the Brooks Museum permanent collection of art including Impressionist pieces. While there we toured a four star restaurant at the Peabody Hotel and saw a demonstration from their head chef. In March of 2012, we will take a four day trip to New Orleans to learn about French Heritage in the U.S.
French Club is virtually connected. Our club has a social networking page online- Visit us on Facebook. In the past we have participated in virtual field trips with the Cincinnati Museum of Art and NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center. We have partnered with a school in the north of France to become “e-pals.”
French Club sees that many needs exist both at Buckhorn and in the world. Our club had worked on various projects over the years. From earthquake relief in Haiti, to Operation Christmas Child Shoebox collection, the club works to ensure that others know that they are cared for.
Buckhorn’s French Club is thinking globally and acting locally to address important local and international issues while promoting the rich French cultures of the world.
